WHAT IS THE ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE KAMPALA?
The Alliance Française in Kampala (AFK) is a French language and cultural centre. Its mission is to promote the French language, francophone cultures and cultural exchanges.
The AFK was created in 1955. It is a Ugandan association, non-profit making, non-political, non-religious and non-discriminatory.
The AFK consists of a board of nine members, chaired by a President, who is currently Dr Victoria Bakurumpagi, a French Executive Director, Mr. Jean Jacques Bernabé, 15 teachers, linguistic and cultural coordinators, a librarian and further administration staff.
The AFK is now installed on Mackinnon Road in Nakasero sharing their new premises with their partners the Ugandan German Cultural Society (UGCS).
SO WHAT DOES THE ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE DO IN KAMPALA?
Language centre
In 2008, 1251 students studied French as a foreign language (adults and children) for business or private reasons e.g. tourism, banking, commerce, to prepare for exams or simply for traveling purposes.
It is the only certified examination centre in Uganda for the French National Education Diplomas: DELF and DALF. (67% success rate last year by AFK students)
Other services offered by the language department are:
Translations and interpretations in French, Lugandan, English and Swahili.
An expertise centre to define and specify needs for made to measure courses.
Teacher training programs.
A resource centre available for consultation by all French teachers in Uganda.
Cultural centre
All member and student cardholders can use the multimedia library of French books, films, CDs, subscription magazines, Internet and television.
They can also take advantage of the weekly Guitar, Ciné, Theatre, Art and French clubs for free and enter events organized by the AFK at a reduced rate.
A monthly programme is developed showing future educational and cultural activities such as:
Cultural: Ugandan and International touring artists have performed in Concerts and Shows with diverse influences in music, dance and art.
Educational: ‘Lire en fête’ (book, poetry and play reading organized with Ugandan and International schools), ‘French Language Week’, Conferences and Documentary films.
Festivals and International Events: ‘Fête de la musique’ (on the 21st June throughout France amateur and professional musicians join together to perform in concerts and street festivals), ‘Fête de la Francophonie’ (all the Francophone Embassies celebrate their various cultures together with the AFK) and ‘European day’.
AFK partners: With the UGCS, joint ventures bring Ugandan and International artists together in projects such as ‘Dance Week’, ‘Kampala Dream Circus’, Art exhibitions, International Women’s day…
Posters and flyers are distributed around Kampala and all our cultural events are open to the general public.
HOW TO BECOME A STUDENT
Submit 2 passport photographs and ID.
A short test will be given to assess the class level and then having enrolled and paid the corresponding fee you are ready to start learning!

HOW TO BECOME A MEMBER
Submit 2 passport photographs and 10.000 Ush for 1 years membership and then you will be informed of all AFK activities by email or SMS.
