As soon as you enter the restaurant you almost feel as if you are in Greece thanks to the restaurant’s eclectic décor: traditional blue and white borders around the walls, murals displaying Greek gods, chequered table clothes and background Greek music. The menu features Greek classics and we sampled quite a few of them. For starters we had some Mezza - dips with bread including Tsatziki (cucumber, yoghurt, garlic and dill), Skordalia (Garlic Dip), Melitzanosalata (Aubergine paste), Taramosalata (Fish roe blended into a paste with lemon), Tahini (Sesame paste in garlic and lemon), and Houmous (Chick pea blended with Tahini), which were served with warm Pita Bread. The portions are generous and would be sufficient on their own, but we wanted to
sample as many of the meals as we could and we ordered some of the main course dishes. In light of the food that was still to come, we had to push the dips aside to leave room for the next course - still to come was an absolute favourite of mine - lightly grilled Houloumi Cheese. If you have never tried this, it is a must. From the grill we ordered some of the house specialties – home made Sheftailia Cypriot pork sausage and some Chicken Souvlakia (Kebab marinated in olive oil). We also had some Moussaka – layers of potatoes, aubergines, mincemeat topped with cheese béchamel sauce and baked in the oven and some Dolmades (vine leaves wrapped up with rice and Greek herbs) as a vegetable dish. Of course a Greek meal would not be complete without a customary Greek Salad (Lettuce with cucumber, tomato, feta cheese and olives dressed in olive oil
dressing).

Overall the food was of good quality and it was served hot – the meals did not take long to arrive either. The service was good, although it was not that busy when we were there (No rowdy customers smashing plates!). Wines are not extravagantly priced, with a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc selling for 40,000/=. If you haven’t been to Athina Taverna yet, and you’d like to try something different from curries and Chinese, I recommend it highly - especially for celebrations of any kind – you need a crowd just so you can try all the different dishes and flavours they have to offer. Price range: Ugandan standard: high, European standard: moderate
