Though an early
coffee venture was doomed to failure he was having
such a nice time that he induced two others of his
brothers to give up their career training in England to
join him in Uganda. The failure of the coffee enterprise
necessitated the three brothers finding some other
means of support, and these afforded wonderful
opportunity for adventure and escapades which are
the meat of this book.
The hunting of game became their passion and took
them all over East Africa to the extent that one of
them eventually got killed by a lion whilst hunting in
the Belgian Congo. But the slaughter of elephant,
hippo, lion et al was not frowned upon then as it is
now so that they prospered and were feted by the
local population for the apparent service they were
providing. They should be judged by 1910 mores not
2010 ones.
Prosperity came after the First World War, in which
they participated in the lake borne raid on Bukoba,
with the arrival of the fourth brother and their playing
an important role in the development of the cotton
industry with a string of ginneries around Lake Kiogya,
the sale of which enabled them to virtually retire to
Kaptagat near Eldoret.
