Throughout Uganda, many women live in extreme poverty, struggling to educate their children, gain access basic medical care and maintain an adequate diet. In an effort to reach impoverished women in rural areas, BeadforLife, in collaboration with The Earthworks Foundation, trained women from Mubako village just outside Nile Safari Lodge adjacent to Murchison Falls National Park. The Earthworks Foundation was created to promote and support environment and community-based projects surrounding GeoLodges.
With the assistance of ‘BeadforLife,’ a Ugandan NGO, women across Uganda are being taught the art of making jewelry out of recycled paper. It’s a simple yet effective process; strips of colorful paper from old magazines or brochures are rolled and |
varnished, then threaded with small glass beads to make beautiful pieces of jewelry. This unique wealth creation project generates income to assist these women and their families to overcome poverty, HIV/AIDS and war. BeadforLife works directly with 200 impoverished families and their communities. All net profits from the sales of the beads are reinvested in community development work including health, education and affordable housing.

How can you help? For the women of Mubako village, getting their hands on paper is a bit difficult, if not impossible! They could really use your old high-gloss magazines, last years’ calendars, flyers or any colorful paper you might want to get rid of.
