I choose to go for lunch at Just Kicking on Sunday as I heard their roast lunch was good. The choice the day I went was lamb or beef served with all the trimming. I must say I was glad I went as the lunch was excellent: succulent lamb with a hint of garlic and rosemary, crispy roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, crunchy vegetables (Not very traditionally English but I prefer them that way), lashing of gravy and the best bit was getting Yorkshire puddings even when you ordered lamb. I am told that it varies each Sunday with chicken, pork or lamb but always beef.
Just Kicking is one of the oldest bars in town (I don’t think any bar in Uganda is more than 10 years old.) and is actually known as a sports bar but the pub has a lot more character than that. Owned by two English blokes it has a typical pub menu serving fish and chips, bangers and mash, excellent burgers and cottage pie |
(I’ve tried both of these) and Steak and Kidney pies. There is also some salads and snack s which are all very well priced.

As I was saying, sport is the general theme with memorabilia covering most of the walls including signed rugby and football shirts. The walls are a warm yellow with a burgundy border around the bottom and one corner has some comfortable sofas. There is a central bar which gives the bar a good ambience when it is not busy which is well stocked (They have some imported beers) and not overly expensive either.
They have a happy hour every evening from 6-7 pm which is a popular time to go for a sundowner (there is usually no sport on at this time and good background music.) I am told that Friday lunch is also a must for local businessmen who meet for their renowned steaks over a lunch time beer. |
Just Kicking also has a free internet hot-spot, darts board and pool table. So even if are not a sports fan, pop in for a drink and check out this famous Kampala watering hole.
Just Kicking is situated in Kisementi, Kololo. Open daily from 4:30 pm and for lunch on Friday, Saturdays and Sunday.
