The Kampala Street Art Festival under the theme “Pot in a hole” was held on Sunday, 27th May 2007 out on Bukoto Street in Kamwokya. It was a unique event, organized by the Ugandan German Cultural Society in conjunction with the Uganda Artists’ Association under the framework of their cooperation for the promotion and appreciation of art.

The objective was to fundraise for the proposed modern art museum, which the Uganda Artists’ Association is committed to setting up, but also to raise the interest of the public for art and bring them into closer contact with the artists to interact in a relaxed atmosphere.
The whole day event saw quite a number of artists participating in their various fields of specialization. About 50 Artist brought their studios out onto the street and the activities included, painting on canvas, screen printing, face painting, filling potholes etc. There were stalls, exhibiting various art pieces for sale. A cross-section of about 2000 people attended this event and kept strolling up and down the street, making pauses at the different stalls, and get themselves involved in the production of the artwork. |
Live band music by different performing groups and individuals kept playing all day long to provide a lively mood. Acrobats performed to the amusement of the spectators as well as two fashion shows during the live preferences. It was a great success filled with fun.
In general the Kampala Art Festival brought together the public as well as different professional groups with art as the unifying factor. The vision is to organize the Street Art Festival annually and raise it to a well known Art Festival in Africa.
There will be an exhibition of the potholes, the canvas and a slide show of the event opening on 22 August 2007 lasting for one month at the UGCS, 62 Bukoto Street, Kamwokya.
