Restaurant Review : Lotus Mexicana Beach Bar

Friendly staff provided us with menus and drinks and complimentary Tortilla chips with salsa – yum! We wanted to try as many of the drinks as we could and still get back to work in a sober state (this is hard because their drinks menu is vast) so we ordered virgin margarita’s, soda’s and beers. We did not order starters as we found the Tortilla chips and salsa to be quite filling and we also knew how big the food portions are.

Before we rushed in and placed our food orders we took some time out to enjoy the atmosphere of the place – this is where we all decided that Lotus Mexicana Beach Bar felt like we were sitting on a beach somewhere in Mombasa - and it felt so comfortable and relaxing. We ordered different main meals which consisted of Grilled Calamari & chips served with lemon butter and coleslaw (25,500), Seafood Rice (a combo of prawns, calamari and fish in a seasoned aromatic rice, 22,500), Prawn Carbonara (a classic creamy carbonara sauce with bacon, parmesan cheese and grilled prawns, 27,500); Beer Battered Fish & Chips served with tartar sauce and coleslaw (22,500), Prawn & Calamari C o m b o which was served grilled with lemon butter, chips and coleslaw
( 2 5 , 5 0 0 ) and then a side order of Wasabi mashed potatoes (4,500) was also ordered. Each meal was served on a plate that fitted inside a metal bucket – we were not only impressed with the meals but also the way the meals were presented. When you order off the menu you have a choice of ordering from the Surf Menu which is essentially seafood, fish and other delights from the sea, or from the Turf Menu which consists of your beef, chicken and pork specialties.

Fresh crab (37,500) is served on Sundays only and this consists of a whole kilo of steamed Indian Ocean crab served in ginger scallion or garlic sauce with fries and coleslaw.

The Beach Bar is fully licensed and aside from their wide variety of beers, wines and sodas, they also stock Dom Perignon and other well known champagne
brands. Their selection of “island style” drinks is vast and they all taste so good that it’s often difficult to choose, however our favourite drink is a Dawa (vodka/ gin mixed with crushed ice, lime, honey and sugar) which we can highly recommend. Another option to consider would be to order a pitcher of Margarita for the table which is really good value for money. The Lotus Beach Bar also serve different flavoured Milkshakes for the Kids which are divine!

Notes:
Fridays and Saturday nights are busy so it is recommended that you call ahead and make a reservation.
The food is prepared from scratch so it does take around 45 minutes to arrive once it has been ordered.
The restaurant is open from 4pm-11pm every day. Half price Happy Hour cocktails from Monday-Friday 5-7pm.

All in all we had a super time at the Lotus Mexicana Beach Bar and I can honestly say that we’ll be back.
