Cassia lodge is situated on Bunga Hill. It is quite a drive out of town if you want to go there for dinner but once you get past the traffic in Kansanga it is a clear run on the road down to Bunga. The lodge is well sign posted and osnce we had driven up the hill we arrived at the lodge which would not look out of place in a game reserve. You have to park at the bottom and then walk further up the hill to the reception where we were shown upstairs to the restaurant and bar. We went to the terrace bar for a drink while we looked at the menu. Cassia Lodge & Restaurant claims they have the best view in town and I have to agree – a panoramic view of Kampala by night and the lake with distant cloud lightning putting on a show for us in the distance                                                                                                                                      More

Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge had opened its doors for exactly 15 days when my husband and I arrived for our Invitational three day stay. The ten hour drive from Kampala on the Masaka-Mbarara road to the lodge is long so it is worth your while (time permitting) to break up the drive by staying in either Mbarara or Lake Mburo National Park over night. The drive to Lake Mburo NP will take you 4 hours from Kampala and Mbarara around 5 hours.
The drive to Clouds is pleasant enough – from Kisoro, the road climbs towards Nkuringo offering excellent views including the triangular peaks of the Virunga Volcanoes of Rwanda and Congo, the Western Rift Valley and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.                                                                                                                            More
Uganda is home to many of God’s greatest creations and none more so than the powerfully built yet inimitably shy Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei).
Habitating some of the most inaccessible areas in Tropical Africa, their home range reaches over an area from Uganda into the DRC and Rwanda. In Uganda, a population of roughly 340 (according to a 2003 Census) Mountain Gorillas reside in The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Currently there are four habituated family groups open for those of us drawn to trekking through sometimes difficult terrain to view – three based on the Buhoma Side of Bwindi and one on the Southern Side at Nkuringo, with two more currently being habituated to keep with a burgeoning Tourism demand.                                                                                              More

Colour...burnt orange, fire engine red, jade green, marshmallow pink, denim blue...it’s the first thing that hits you when you walk into the Kilombera workshop (located 4kms from Jinja) and the second thing that hits you is the rhythmical sound of wooden shuttles flying back and forth producing metres of gorgeous fabric for kikois, rugs, bedspreads, hammocks, tablemats and baby slings. The workshop moved to its new (and in true Ugandan style, unfinished and yet operational) building in January last year after growing from two small looms in a back yard, to 5 small looms, one larger one with even more room and storage space required for all those beautiful cones of cotton.                                                                                    More

Last month I started a new series on STD’s following requests from a number of alarmed parties who had noticed a perceived increase in rape in the past few months. In summary, rape often follows a pattern, is preventable, and with hindsight predictable. Many attacks are by people known and trusted, often relatives, teachers, clergy, etc. The workshop moved to its new (and in true Ugandan style, unfinished and yet operational) building in January last year after growing from two small looms in a back yard, to 5 small looms, one larger one with even more room and storage space required for all those beautiful cones of cotton
Many are set ups, simply wrong place at the wrong time, or involve alcohol.                                                                                                                                      More
