Steak Out Pub Review by Katarzyna Heath

I was told to visit Steak out on a Friday as it was meant to be particularly lively at the weekend, and this certainly boded true. As my group hurtled down Lumumba Avenue in another hair-raising Boda experience we could hear the music growing louder and louder as we neared. Having entered though tight security (strictly no cameras permitted) we were escorted to our table. The dining area is enclosed behind a wicker screen which meant you weren’t part of the bar action but on a plus point it did give you some privacy.

The menu holds quite a wide range of food, including appetizers (around 6,000 shillings) sandwiches, soups, jackets and steak (around 13,000 shillings). It also has Steak Out specials such as the “steak out” platter, an assortment of pretty much every animal under the sun (for all you meat lovers out there!) and the club sandwich, which has such a secret recipe rumour has it that it is stored in a safe under Lake Victoria!

They are very flexible, allowing you to swap you sides with other side orders that you would prefer, such as parsley potatoes or mash. The service wasn’t great, with food arriving over an hour later very sporadically and in two cases not at all, but the staff made up for the problems with their friendless. It was also made better by what became the pinnacle of the evening…the onion rings, which caused near physical violence amongst members of my group! Truly the best onions rings I’ve ever had!

After our food had settled we headed round to the bar, a large and coolly lit area, half under cover and half open air with an extensive spirit selection and other concoctions such as their famous chilli vodka! If you get there early you can grab a seat at one their big wooden tables and benches, but don’t despair if you don’t because the main action is on the dance floor, which was rammed from the moment we arrived, and was still buzzing when we left at 2:00 a.m.

That night it was largely R’n’B and Afro beats but other evenings they have alternative genres of music such as ‘Rock night Thursday” and ‘African Jazz Wednesday’. The venue also boasts a large covered pool hall where the locals are always busy battling it out; enter at your own peril!

Overall Steak out is a really cool Kampala hangout for locals and tourist alike. The music was a bit intense when eating and the service was lacking at times but this didn’t stop us having a really enjoyable and spirit filled night in a great atmospheric venue.
